The Observer (09/03/1880)

“For some time past very little news, if any, has come to hand in reference to the Kelly gang, and many persons, who are not fully conversant with Greta and its inhabitants, are under the impression that the Kellys have made their escape from the colony.”

Kyneton Observer (Vic. : 1856 – 1900), Tuesday 9 March 1880, page 2

Midway, between the township of Greta and Moyhu, there is a small village known as South Hanson, which has its state school and post office, and shortly before the robbery of the National Bank at Euroa, the teacher and children of the state school at South Hanson noticed a lady on a cream colored pony, pass to and fro on several occasions, but little attention was paid to the circumstance at the time. However, a very different complexion was put upon the matter, shortly afterwards, for in the dim grey of the morning, this identical lady was seen to divest herself of her ladylike apparel, and then mounted on her “creamy,” to round up the horses in a paddock belonging to a relative of the Kelly’s, and having cut one of them out, which belonged to Ned Kelly, drove it off, taking the precaution, however, to array herself in her feminine gear, so soon as her object was accomplished it was afterwards discovered that the would be lady was no other than Steve Hart, and that, the pony ridden on the occasion referred to, was one of a pair, which had either strayed or had been stolen from Mr Kett of Wangaratta. Some few weeks after the occurrence narrated above, the police received information that Mr Ketts pony was on the Kilferra station, there it was found and duly restored to its owner. The above information, is not of recent date, but as it is strictly authentic, and has never been published, in the newspapers, we lay it before our readers.

For some time past very little news, if any, has come to hand in reference to the Kelly gang, and many persons, who are not fully conversant with Greta and its inhabitants, are under the impression that the Kellys have made their escape from the colony. Such, however, is not likely to be the case, and any one, who has been a resident in the Greta district for any length of time, or knew anything respecting the Kellys before they took to the bush, will give it as their opinion that they are still in the mountain fastnesses of the ranges, that they have been acquainted with from boyhood. For some two or three years before ” they were wanted,” and when good draught horses were not always come-at-able, they were in the habit of betaking themselves to the neighborhood of their present supposed haunts, for the purpose of obtaining gold, which is to be had in such quantities, as will return, one week with another, fair wages. At the present time there is a well known resident in Greta, who has been enabled to secure a selection of ground, and to build for himself a very comfortable homestead, from the proceeds of the gold so obtained, of course long before the Kellys’ were outlawed.
