A Police Pensioner Shoots Himself. —
Hugh Bracken, a police pensioner, who took part in the capture of the Kelly gang, shot himself dead at Wallan on Friday morning. He placed the muzzle of a loaded gun to his forehead, and pulled the trigger with his foot. He had been ailing for some time. Bracken was the constable stationed at Glenrowan at the time of the Kelly outbreak. Ned Kelly took a neighbor to the police camp at night when the constable was in bed, and got him to knock. In answer to the inquiry, “Who’s there?” the neighbor replied “It is me, Bracken.” The latter then opened the door, to be covered immediately by Ned Kelly, who forced him to take up his temporary abode in the hotel, which was soon afterwards burnt.
