* “Stephen Hart wore dark silk mixture paget coat, light tweed trousers and vest, light felt hat, elastic side boots, cotton shirt, and black tie.” (December 1878)

* “Steve Hart is a small man, fair complexion, small growth of whiskers, dark grey eyes, and appears as though he was ‘on needles and pins’ but not at all a frightened look or nervous.” (February 1879)

* “Steve Hart, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, short dark hair on both sides of face and chin, bandy legs, stout build, clumsy appearance, speaks very slowly ; dressed in dark paget suit, light felt hat, and elastic-side, boots.” (March 1879)

* “When seen previous to the police murders he was a beardless stripling, but now he has grown a long beard, and in appearance so strongly resembles his brother Dick as to be mistaken for him by those who know the latter well.” (November 1879)
