* “One of the men whose names are unknown is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, of slight build, has very fair complexion, whiskers, beard and moustache thin, mild expression of features.” (Victoria Police Gazette, 29 October 1878)

* “3rd, Name unknown, 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, very fair complexion, fair moustache and long beard on chin, very fine like first growth, respectable looking, supposed identical with Charley Brown.” (Victoria Police Gazette, 5 November 1878)

* “Joseph Byrne wore grey tweed paget coat, brown tweed trousers and vest, Rob Roy shirt, black tie, elastic side boots, and light felt hat.” (December 1878)

* “Byrne stands nearly six feet high, long features, fair complexion, and an effeminate cast of countenance, and of a nervous disposition; his manner is quiet, and he appears to a casual observer an inoffensive man.” (February 1879)
